Thank you for making Family Entertainment Network's excellent DVD resources available to us. We are regularly using all of the DVDS we have from the New Testament, Old Testament, and American Heroes series, and we are eagerly awaiting the new DVDs they come out. We have used the DVDs in a variety of settings including Sunday School, Children's church and other programs for children. They have greatly enhanced the quality of what we have to offer. The children love them and the workers have been very glad for the flexibility they have offered. We have also made the DVDs available for families to borrow for home use, and they have been eagerly received.

Often referred to as the “Father of modern astronomy,”the “Father of modern physics,” and the “Father of science,” Galileowas a man of determination and intolerance. At the risk of ruining hisreputation, he disproved one of Aristotle’s theories and in turn, spent the last 8 years of his life under house arrest. Learn of Galileo’s courage and genius in this revealing story of howhis integrity led to a whole new universe of discovery and knowledge.

Overall Theme:
Galileo is called the father of modern science. He dared to challenge Aristotle’s theories and proved the earth revolves around the sun. He believed what good is knowing the truth if you are not willing to defend it.

Summary:

Galileo Galilei (February 15, 1564-January 8, 1642) was an Italian physicist, astronomer, astrologer, and philosopher associated with the scientific revolution. In addition to discovering that the Earth revolves around the sun, Galileo is also credited for making improvements to the telescope and making the first systematic study of uniformly accelerated motion.

The time is 1589 in Pisa Italy. As a professor in a univeristy classroom, Galileo questions the ideas of Aristotle. Knowing that he could be convicted of heresy, he continues to teach that the sun is the center of the universe and not the earth.

He proves his theories by improving a toy called the spyglass. With his new invention of the telescope, he discovers Jupiter has moons revolving around it. This was the proof he needs to show that not everything revolves around the earth. Clavius, a friend of Galileo’s, convinces him to sign a document that says he will not teach that Aristotle is wrong, so he can continue to share his theories.

Pope Urban tells Galileo that he can write a book if he presents both his and Aristotle’s views fairly. Columbe, being jealous of Galileo, finds the document signed by Galileo promising not to teach that Aristole is wrong. Columbe has a forger add to the document that Galileo also promises never to teach his own theories again.

Galileo is found guilty of heresy and is sentenced to house arrest. His faithful servant, Sagredo, is at his side as he dies. Sagredo takes the writings of Galileo and smuggles them into Holland where they can be printed.

Background:

Until the time of Galileo, the church had accepted Aristolte’s views of the universe. Anyone that challenged the ideas of the church could be convicted of heresy and be sentenced to death. Galileo dared to think the unthinkable and defend the indefensible. He went on to inspire Isaac Newton in his Theory of Gravitation, which later gave birth to Einstein’s Theory of Relativity.
