"For some years I have been afflicted with the belief that flight is possible to man.”
– Wilbur Wright

The Wright Brothers, Orville (August 19, 1871-January 30, 1948) and Wilbur (April 16, 1867-May 30, 1912), are credited with making the first controlled, powered human flight on December 17, 1903.

These two American bicycle repairmen were often told that man was not meant to fly, but both Orville and Wilbur refused to believe the naysayers. Instead, they gained the mechanical skills necessary by working in their shop with printing presses, bicycles, motors, and other machinery. (Their work with bicycles in particular influenced their belief that a flying machine could, in fact, be controlled and manipulated with practice).

Learn the thrilling story of these two brothers who risked everything—including their very lives—to become the first men to manage powered flight!

Little-Known Facts:

  • Neither Orville or Wilbur married
  • Both brothers received high school educations but did not receive diplomas
  • Their father traveled often as a bishop in the Church of the United Brethren in Christ and one day brought home a toy "helicopter" for his two younger sons. Wilbur and Orville played with it until it broke, then built their own. In later years, they pointed to their experience with the toy as the initial spark of their interest in flying

My second grade classroom had the opportunity to view a DVD in the series of NestFamily's Animated Hero Classics. The DVDs was about Orville and Wilbur Wright and their discovery of flight. As an educator, the information in the DVD directly related to the content standards given by the state. Below are a list of the standards that were met by the information in the DVD: History - How science and technology have changed the daily lives of people and compare forms of communication and transportation in the past and the present. Recognize the importance of individual action and character and explain how they have made a difference in others' lives. People in Societies - Describe the contributions of significant individuals to the cultural heritage in the United States. Economics - Explain why people in different parts of the world earn a living in a variety of ways. Citizenship Rights and Responsibilities - Demonstrate skills and explain the benefits of cooperation when working in-group settings managing conflict peacefully, respecting others, display courtesy). Social Studies Skills and Methods -Obtaining information from visual and print resources. Distinguish the difference between fact and fiction in visual materials. Communicate information in writing. The Activity book that corresponded with the DVD was not presented formally in the classroom. However, skill appropriate activities were chosen and made into a morning activity packet that the children could work on when they finished their other work. The students seemed to enjoy and apply their knowledge in the activities within the packet. The DVD series and corresponding activity books of Animated Hero Classics would be a helpful reinforcement when teaching the students the curriculum in Social Studies. The DVDs were very animated which captured the students' attention and excitement. I hope that the series becomes a resource available within our school. Sincerely, Dana Falls
